Horace T. Alston
began his career as a longshoreman working on
the Baltimore waterfront in 1963 as a segregated
International Longshoreman's Association (ILA)
local. After progressing through various
union office positions, Horace was elected the
Atlantic Coast District Vice President in 1984.
Within a year, he was elected to his current
position as the Vice President of the International
Longshoreman's Association, AFL-CIO. He
deals not only with his everyday union responsibilities,
but also with numerous port matters including
lobbying the elected state and federal officials
on issues such as dredging and the expansion
of port facilities.
Currently, Horace serves as the President of the ILA Baltimore District Council, co-chairs the ILA Benefit Funds in Maryland, and co-chairs the ILA National Civil Rights Committee.
Mr. Alston also serves on the boards of the Maryland State Transportation Commission, the Private Sector Port Coalition, and the Port of Baltimore Tricentennial Committee. Last year, the Baltimore Junior Association of Commerce honored Horace as the 32nd recipient of the "Port Leader of the Year" award.
In addition to his work with the Port of Baltimore, he has remained active in civic, political and church organizations in the community.
